Generally people used to open bank account in a bank where they are linked with somehow like salary account, relatives account, friends recommendation,  highest interest rate on savings account etc and also by reputation like SBI, ICICI bank, HDFC bank etc.

What documents do you need to open a bank account

Now, in India you can open bank account in any bank providing a valid set of documents. Yes, the documents are almost same for all banks and in this article I will be sharing a list of documents which you have to carry while visiting a bank to open a savings bank account.

Proof of identity (any one of the following)

  • PAN Card
  • Passport (along with validity details like date of expiry)
  • Driving License
  • Voter ID Card
  • Photo ID Card (issued by the central government and its departments, state government and its departments, statutory/ regulatory authorities and public sector undertakings)

Proof of Address (any one of the following)

  • Passport (along with validity details like date of expiry)
  • Driving License
  • Voter ID Card
  • Bank Statement or Passbook
  • Latest Electricity Bill or Telephone Bill, not older than 3 months

Accounts of Minors

If guardian is appointed by the court, order of the court for the same. In case the guardian is illiterate, birth date certificate of the minor from the competent authority

Trusts & foundations

  • Certificate of registration
  • Power of Attorney granted to transact business on its behalf
  • Any officially valid document to identify the trustees, settlers, beneficiaries and those holding Power of Attorney, founders/managers/ directors and their addresses
  • Resolution of the managing body of the foundation/ association Telephone bill

Mandatory documents required for KYC in bank

This is also a common process for all the banks now a days. E.g. if you are opening a bank account in SBI, then What are the documents required to open an account in SBI? You have to download the KYC form online and then submit the same with the below documents when you are visiting first time in SBI or any other bank to open a savings account.

  • Print out the Account Opening Form (AOF)
  • Proof of identity and address (Passport, Voter’s ID, Driving Licence, Aadhar card, NREGA card, PAN card)
  • 2 recent passport-size coloured photographs.
  • In the case of minors below the age of 10, ID proof of the person who will operate the account is required.

Even if you have a savings account already, for which KYC is not done you can do this as soon as possible. Just ask you bank to send the required documents to complete the KYC process. Bank will send you the documents in your mail box. Take a print out and then fill up the forms carefully. After that you have to visit to nearest branch and the submit the KYC form filled up with all necessary documents mentioned above with recent passport size photographs.
